In a recent lawsuit, three crew members who worked on the movie "Rust" have taken legal action against the famous actor Alec Baldwin, along with two production companies, Rust Movie Productions, LLC and El Dorado Pictures. The crew members, named Ross Addiego, Doran Curtin, and Reese Price, filed their complaint in a court located in Santa Fe County, New Mexico.
The entire, 28-page legal document (complaint) can be reviewed here.
The lawsuit revolves around a tragic incident that took place on October 21, 2021, while filming the movie. On that day, Alec Baldwin fired a Colt .45 revolver on the set, and the gun was unexpectedly loaded with live ammunition. Sadly, the gunshot resulted in the death of Halyna Hutchins, the movie's cinematographer, and also caused injuries to the three crew members who are now suing.
In their complaint, Addiego, Curtin, and Price accuse Baldwin and the production companies of being negligent, which means they failed to take proper care to ensure everyone's safety on the movie set. The crew members claim that the defendants did not follow the necessary safety rules and regulations that are common in the film industry. They argue that Baldwin and the production companies were more focused on saving money and time, rather than creating a secure working environment for everyone involved.
The plaintiffs point out several instances where safety concerns were ignored, such as when there were previous incidents of guns being fired on set without warning. They also mention that Baldwin himself did not attend the required training sessions on how to safely handle firearms.
Furthermore, the crew members accuse Baldwin of mishandling the revolver by pointing it at Hutchins and other crew members, including themselves. As one of the producers of the movie, Baldwin is also blamed for hiring an inexperienced armorer (the person responsible for the weapons on set) named Hannah Gutierrez Reed, and for not taking steps to reduce the risks that came with her lack of proper qualifications.
As a result of the incident, the plaintiffs claim they suffered various injuries, including hearing loss, physical trauma, and emotional distress. They believe that these injuries were caused by the loud blast of the gun being fired in close proximity to them. Additionally, the crew members argue that Baldwin and the production companies violated a specific New Mexico law called the Negligent Use of a Deadly Weapon statute.
In their lawsuit, Addiego, Curtin, and Price are asking for financial compensation for the damages they have suffered. These damages include the negative impact on their quality of life, the pain and suffering they have experienced, medical expenses related to their injuries, lost wages, and the emotional trauma they have endured. They are also seeking additional money known as "punitive damages," which are meant to punish the defendants for their particularly reckless behavior.
To summarize, this lawsuit is an attempt by the three crew members to hold Alec Baldwin and the production companies accountable for the tragic events that unfolded on the set of "Rust." They believe that the defendants' negligence and disregard for proper safety measures led to their injuries and emotional trauma, and they are seeking financial compensation through a jury trial.
